- Our Pastor
Our Pastor OUR PASTOR Pastor Craig B. Key Sr. Pastor Craig B. Key, Sr. was born and raised in the Washington, DC area. He accepted Christ at an early age. In 1995, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After much training and traveling, he was finally stationed in Norfolk, Virginia. While living in Norfolk, VA, he joined the Shining Star Missionary Baptist Church located in Seat Pleasant, Maryland. Pastor Key was dedicated to the commute, driving from Norfolk, Virginia to Seat Pleasant, Maryland every weekend. Sensing the call of God to the ministry, he enrolled in the Baptist Bible College & Seminary, where he took various introductory classes. He was licensed to preach on June 11, 1999 by Pastor James N. Flowers, Jr. In 2001, Pastor Key joined Newness of Life Bible Church of Bealeton, VA, under the leadership of Bishop James M. Mills, Sr. Pastor Key was elevated, in March of 2003, to the office of an Elder where he carried out numerous leadership roles such as Sunday School Teacher, Director of Young Men’s Ministry, Director of Audio/Visual Ministry, Chief Assistant to the Pastor as well as preaching and teaching in several different Shelters in the MD & DC area. As seasons changed, the Lord led Pastor Key to be a help to two (2) additional ministries: The Church of Restoration under the direction of Pastor Larry and Co-Pastor Leittia Vaughn (Cheverly, MD) where both he and his lovely wife were the Youth Pastors and The Sanctuary at Kingdom Square under the direction of Pastor Anthony G. Maclin (Capitol Heights, MD) where they both again served as Head Ministers of the Missions Ministry. In August 2007, through the leading of the Holy Spirit Pastor Key Founded Living Word Bible Fellowship Church. God led Pastor Key to start a ministry where he could carry out his passion to teach and train the people of God. His desire is to bring people into the knowledge of Jesus Christ and His saving and restoring power. Pastor Key has completed various Leadership, Counseling, and Ministerial Training Courses with The Crown of Christ Ministries (Suitland, MD), as well as various courses at National Bible College (Ft. Washington, MD). In May 2012 Pastor Key completed his B.A. in Biblical Studies with a concentration of Psychology and Counseling. In January 2017 Pastor Key began pastoring Second Church of God (Washington, DC) while also Pastoring Living Word (Upper Marlboro, MD). By April 2017 the two ministries merged as one. Pastor Key refers to it as “a Merge made in Heaven”, as the unity and comradery of the two ministries is amazing! Throughout the past several years of ministry, Pastor Key’s heart has always remained the same…“A Heart after Souls”. Pastor Key is on the move for God and shows no signs of him slowing down any time soon! Pastor Key is married to the lovely Elder Angela R. Key and to this union they have four children; Sharnese, Craig Jr., Joi , and Kamill. The two also have two granddaughters; Alyssa and Madison. He is most grateful to have his family serve with him in ministry!

Our History Highlights The Second Church of God traces its origins back to 1925, under the leadership of Elder Patrick Cyrus. However, it wasn't until 1933 that the church began to take shape, with three member s gaining permission from Rev. Charles T. Benjamin to establish a new congregation. Located at 1530 New Jersey Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C., the church found its second pastor in Elder Edgar Johnson, who served from 1933 until 1967. Under Elder Johnson's leadership, along with his wife Sister Johnson, the church flourished, building a strong congregation. In 1967, due to Elder Johnson's declining health, he passed the torch to a younger minister, Elder Robert L. Key, Sr. Elder Key along with dedicated members George Jones and Dyer Matthews, embarked on a mission to refurbish the aging church building. In a major decision in 1980, the church opted to demolish both the old church building and a newly purchased adjacent property, salvaging the bricks to construct a new edifice. With the help of brethren from New Jersey, who volunteered their time each weekend, the new church building began to take shape. Elder Key, despite modest means and refusing to accept a salary, dedicated himself to serving the community, and aiding those in need. Elder Key continued his faithful service until his passing in 1992, leaving a profound legacy of selfless service and compassion for the community. Rev. Wilbert H. DeLaine assumed leadership until 1995, succeeded by Rev. James Green as interim pastor until 2000. In 2000, Rev. Theodore R. McClain took over as pastor, serving until his retirement in 2014. After several interim leaders, including pastors and ministers, Elder Craig B. Key Sr., the grandson of Elder Robert L. Key Sr., was appointed as pastor in 2017, continuing the legacy of service and dedication established by his predecessors. Throughout its history, the Second Church of God has remained committed to its mission of spiritual growth, community service, and the advancement of the gospel.
